Spring is a great time to declutter your home. Decluttering can feel overwhelming, but here are a few things to do before, during, and after the process. Before you start your annual spring cleaning, use these tips to declutter the house first.
Prepare to Declutter Your Home
Before starting to declutter, gather your supplies. Have trash bags, boxes, bins, and storage options on hand. Be prepared to do some work. Decluttering the house can be exhausting both physically and mentally.
Many people hold on to things because of sentimental value, but think about how often you use these things. Some people are reluctant to let go of items because they were expensive. However, the space the item uses in your home might be worth more than holding on to something you don’t use.
Start Small
To declutter your home, focus on one area first. Choose a small area to get started and work your way through the room. In the bedroom, you might begin with a single closest. Some rooms, like the garage, you might want to tackle wall by wall. Make a plan and schedule time to work on your decluttering project. Be patient with yourself; it won’t all happen in one day or even one weekend.
Declutter Your Home by Sorting
A simple approach to decluttering is to use three bags or boxes. Label one for items to keep, one as trash, and one for items to donate or sell. Once you have cleared a space, organize the things you will be keeping and put them in designated spots. Take out the garbage. The last container will have things that are still usable. Donate them to a local charity or thrift store.
When Was the Last Time You Used It?
If you are not sure if you should keep or toss something, think about the last time you wore or used that item. If it has been over 12 months, you will probably never miss it. If you are having difficulty deciding, look at the space the item occupies in your home. Is that storage space better used for something else?
After decluttering, make an effort to keep the home neat and organized. Before making a purchase, plan where you will store the item. Get into the habit of clearing things out more frequently. Move things out of your home as you bring other things in. For example, if you purchase new items of clothing, donate a few pieces from your wardrobe to charity. Less clutter will help you be more comfortable at home.
